In an era of daily AI hype, sensationalist headlines and constant tool launches, our ability to distinguish signal from noise has become our most critical skill. If you only pay attention to the hype, you’ll miss the structural shifts that are rewriting the rules of our economy and society
Looking back at 2025, I aim to cut through the noise and summarise the most significant expert insights that defined this year’s ‘signal’, offering a glimpse into the ‘parallel reality’ that awaits us in 2026.
2025: Three Signals That Changed Everything
1. The shift to ‘living intelligence’ (Amy Webb)
While the hype focused on better chatbots, Amy Webb identified the convergence of AI, biotechnology, and advanced sensing as the real signal.
2025 was the year AI became physical. We entered the ‘Technology Super Cycle’, where biology became programmable. Tools like AlphaFold 3 meant that we stopped ‘discovering’ medicines and materials and started designing them. AI is no longer confined to our screens; it has become the operating system for the physical world.
2. The ‘Lego-isation’ of software (Ivan Zhao)
The noise said: ‘AI will replace apps.’ Ivan Zhao (Notion) responded: ‘AI will make software modular.’
By 2025, we had moved away from rigid, one-size-fits-all SaaS. We entered an era of ‘handcrafted’ digital environments, in which users can build their own tools in real time. AI agents have evolved from simple assistants into autonomous architects that structure data and workflows behind the scenes. Software has finally become as flexible as Lego.
3. The Invisible Acceleration (Jack Clark)
Jack Clark of Anthropic highlighted a signal that many had overlooked: AI-to-AI communication.
While humans are still perfecting their prompts, a significant proportion of digital intelligence has transitioned to ‘Droid Speak’ — machine communication that occurs 100 times faster than human language. This has created a hidden layer of hyper-acceleration in research and optimisation that is largely invisible to the naked eye, yet its effects are felt in every industry.
Outlook for 2026: Living in a Parallel Reality
The groundwork laid in 2025 will lead us towards a transformative 2026. Jack Clark made a profound prediction: by summer 2026, we will witness a ‘cognitive gap’:
Those who natively master frontier AI systems will essentially be living in a ‘parallel reality’. Their productivity, problem-solving speed and access to insights will far exceed traditional structures, making communication between the two worlds increasingly difficult. We are transitioning from viewing AI as a tool to viewing it as an invisible, global infrastructure.
